Welcome to freshman year, population you. But before you pack your bags and arrive on campus, we want to know: have you found a college roommate?
Searching for a roommate can be anxiety-inducing. You worked hard to get into the school of your dreams and now you need to find someone willing to share that first-year experience with. Your roommate doesn’t have to be your best friend, but you should at least get along with them, right?

We know that many of you are spending hours messaging other high school seniors on social media, making awkward small talk, and hoping the person that you’re chatting with hasn’t already found someone to live with.
In case you didn’t know, roommate matching has come a long way. Your millennial big sister once filled out a paper survey to find a roommate, on which she claimed she was a clean roommate (even though you’re pretty sure you’ve never seen the bottom of her bedroom floor because it was always covered in clothes). And, in between the paper survey and Instagram boom, came the Facebook class groups, with thousands of incoming freshmen making posts with the same “I like going out on the weekends, but I’m also down for a night in” line.
In the year 2026, why continue to search through hundreds of Instagram profiles and message tons of people who aren’t even committed to your school yet? Let us introduce you to the easier way to a stellar freshman year.

Answering questions about your living preferences
Take the survey and answer each question honestly. The more truthful your answers, the more accurate your compatibility rating.
Your compatibility rating consists of how many similar answers you and the other student give during the survey. If you agree on part of the quiz, you will see a 100% compatibility rating on their profile.
After you complete the quiz and look through your compatible matches, you have the option to update your filters. This option allows you to narrow down your search even further by only showing compatible students who meet a specific criteria. For example, if you wanted to live with someone in your major you could change your filters to only show matching majors.
Steps to finding the perfect roommate
Step 1: Fill out your profile entirely and accurately.
The more information you provide on your profile, the more other students can decipher if you’re a compatible roommate before you send a “what’s up” message. Include your name, your hobbies, sports you played in high school, music taste, fun facts, or anything else that tells someone who you are.
Step 2: Be responsive
Once you have a complete profile, it’s time to tap into your extroverted personality. Scroll through your highest compatible matches and read their profiles. Message anyone who has similar interests that you can
- Communication is key
- Message people
- And respond when people message you first
Step 3: Have your compatibility deal-breakers
Stay true to yourself. If you know that you’re not a morning person and you’re messaging someone who shares a lot of similar interests but gets up every day at 6 am, it might be best to pivot your conversation into being friends not roommates.
Things like:
- Sleep schedule
- Guest policy
- Thermostat
Are common topics roommates get into arguments about. Save yourself the headache and get on the same page about these things early. Many topics like this are covered in the ZeeMee Roommate Matching Quiz but it may give you peace of mind to have a more in depth conversation if you’re serious about living with someone.
It’s important to note that once you have found a roommate and confirmed with each other that you want to live together, you will need to follow directions from your official university housing office. Typically there is a form that needs to be filled out with both of your contact information to communicate this preference with the university.
Gentle reminder: everyone is in the same boat as you. Using tools like the ZeeMee Roommate Finder can help you get over your initial nervousness by identifying students who already share a lot of preferences that you’re looking for in a roommate. Take the stress out of your living situation. Use the ZeeMee Roommate Finder.
