传承(Legacy)Medium: Pen, ink printing, water color, acrylic paintDate: September 15 - November 7, 2017 This is my first project in Independent Study Drawing (this course is equivalent to AP Studio Art: Drawing; it is arranged due to a schedule conflict) beginning my junior year in high school. The bamboo in the center separates the past on the left and the present on the right. The creature on the left is what pandas looked like tens of thousands year ago according to scientists, and some ink printings enumerate achievement of ancient China, from mathematics to architectures; ink printings on the right are their counterparts of modern China, represented by the modern panda. The green primitive bamboo forest on the left and the red color door of a Chinese quadrangle dwelling matches a traditional Chinese color pattern. The legacy of China is not directly taking everything but, like the panda, requires evolution; at the same time we should keep valuable things, like the characters 土 which means "dirt". The bamboo does not actually have a contour here - its inferred lines are the formed by the negative space between the panda’s fur.

A Declaration of War to 直男癌Medium: Colored pencil, charcoal pencilDate: March 2 - May 1, 2018 This is my fourth project in Independent Study Drawing. This project is dedicated to depicting my innermost thoughts on masculinity. In an all-boy high school, the mainstream definition of masculinity is, sadly, violence, sexism, and homophobia. My self-portrait on the left has two parts: a "mask" in black and white without any emotion and an anime-style (at our school, many boys regard anime as a symbol of feminism and weakness) rendition of a true, colorful self that is wounded by words that compels me I to meet the expectation of being "masculine"; such words I have heard before are shown to the right and my mental retaliations are colorfully rendered inside the layer of the "masculinity expectation“ words. I consider myself to be an outspoken equalitarian who believes that we as human are all equal after all and we have the right to be ourselves. Thus, I want to encourage viewers of this work to stand up against injustices. Though I watched a lot of anime before, this is my first time drawing in anime style. “It’s mind-blowing.” – One of the faculty from my school. I used both Chinese and English for the list of words because I heard them both here in the US and back home. This social problem is truly universal. The gray, outside layer is the attacks on my personality and pressures compelling me to become “masculine”; the colorful, inside layer is my defense against such corrupting pressures. The definition of 直男癌: n. Literally “Straight Man’s Cancer”, a Chinese internet slang used to ridicule men who fanatically pursue masculinity and contempt femininity.
